Your exhaust system includes your muffler, piping, catalytic converter, and oxygen sensors. Over the years, manufacturers have developed more sophisticated exhaust systems which increase efficiency, reduce noise, and limit emissions from your vehicle. The exhaust system sends dangerous exhaust gas from the engine out and away from the car to keep from affecting you and your passengers and reduces exhaust noise from the engine. The catalytic converter reduces the level of harmful pollutants in the exhaust. There are also oxygen sensors attached in the exhaust system that monitor the level of oxygen in the exhaust gases to maintain efficient engine operation and to monitor the efficiency of the catalytic converter.
Signs that you may have an issue with your exhaust system include loud noises while driving, decrease in fuel efficiency, poor acceleration, engine misfires, drowsiness while driving, rotten egg smell, and your check engine light may be illuminated.
